Top Indian Dishes In Mumbai

#1 Vada Pav: Starting the first list is, Vada Pav, which you might often hear being pronounced as Vada Pao. It's one of the top Indian street foods that are available throughout Mumbai's town. It starts from a spicy, smoothly battered potato blend and is deep fried to a crisp. The patty becomes stuffed in a soft white bun and then immersed into a range of very delicious chutneys.

The different chutneys used in Vada Pao (Vada Pav) is the most amazing part of its preparation. When I tasted it, my expression was, “OMG wow!!” It tasted like a salty, minty, spicy, intensely flavored, delicious vegetarian sandwich.

#2 Bhelpuri: Bhelpuri is the ideal beach snack in Mumbai, with a variety of tastes: crunchy, sour, sweet, spicy, sour, and salty, it makes you want to eat more Bhelpuri while hanging out and snacking. Although they are several versions of Bhelpuri, it is usually stuffed rice and Sev (fried tiny crispies prepared from chickpea flour), also mixed up with tomatoes, dhania, onions and an even ration of spicy, salty, and sweet chutneys.

After a bite, it is impossible to stop eating Bhelpuri thanks to its savory taste. Personally, when I eat Bhelpuri, I take lime and squeeze it all over thus making it kind of sweet, savory, and of course crispy. When compared in taste, Bhelpuri is similar to rice crispies but mixed with a variety of Indian spices.

#3 Sev Puri: Mumbai has numerous varieties of Chaats but my favorite is Sev Puri. This Puri is flat and creamy potatoes and onions are used as its toppings, then chili, garlic chutney, and tamarind are used to cover it up, it doesn't end there as chopped bits of sour mango are sprinkled over it and eventually topped with Sev (Cripsy thing noodles) prepared from chickpea flour.

Mainly found in a pack of Sev Puri are onions and potatoes, making it one of my favorite chaats, and it is so creamy that if reminds me of the Guacamole I ate during My Mexico City Tour. Sev Puri burns your throat a little bit going down and then you can taste the sweetness from the chutney. It is so well balanced and that is an awesome snack (crunchy and juicy).

#4 Pav Bhaji: Standing proud as one of the most iconic street foods dominating the streets of India, Pav Bhaji was invented in early 1850 when Indian street food vendors mashed up butter and spices (cumin and turmeric) with leftover assorted vegetables and served with baked bread. Nowadays in the streets of Mumbai, Pav Bhaji is often cooked on an enormous heated griddle with the spices, tomatoes, and potatoes all battered into a puree whirled with butter and water thus making it saucy, and usually served alongside a buttered toasted roll making it a combo of Pao bun and Bhaji (spiced tomato-potato puree).

In every bite of Pav Bhaji, you can feel the starchiness from the potato blending with the tartness of the tomato, and in its spicy taste, a blend of cumin and turmeric is quite noticeable. Its buttery taste makes it a well-buttered fluffy roll.

#5 Grilled Meat: In India, Grilled meat is an important street food and in the streets of Mumbai, a few crazily attractive delicacies can be found in every corner, with chicken tikka, boti kebabs & seekh kebabs rolls (meat covered with bread), roasted on open charcoal heat. Tourists in Mumbai should definitely try the Chicken bhuna rolls, they are great for a late night snack and on the go food for travelers.

#6 Chai: This is a popular beverage tea in India and its neighboring countries, and one of the sort after street drinks in Mumbai. Naturally black, the tea is traditionally brewed strong, served hot and flavored with a generous amount of unskimmed milk and sugar for taste, often, cardamom, ginger or masala is added to give an extra boost.

In every cup of Chai, You can taste just a bit of Indian spice and a little bit of cardamom, and then it is creamy. Definitely taking hot cups of tea on the streets of Mumbai bring great delight.

#7 Pani Puri: The inventor of Pani Puri is obviously a genius chef, a good street snack with a sweet taste, and also fun to eat. A small hollow tube is used to create a hole in the middle of the Puri and then half-filled with a mashed combo of spices, tomatoes, onions, chickpeas, and potatoes. The Puri is then submerged in a flavored liquid that fills the other half of the Puri, then it is ready to be consumed.

Puri is eaten one at a bite and also quickly to avoid it becoming soggy and breaking up with the watery flavor spilling over. Generally, Pani Puri is spicy and a little bit salty, a bit of freshness and the starchy chickpeas all wrapped up in a hollow chip.

#8 Bombay Duck: Rarely found on the street but still an iconic food in Mumbai and neighboring cities, Bombay Duck is a food you shouldn't miss when visiting Mumbai. Although the name is called Duck, it is a local lizardfish and not an actual duck. Like most Indian foods, it can be prepared in different methods but the common way is to graze it with semolina flour and deep fry.

The basic recipe for a Mumbai sandwich involves layers of vegetables like cucumber, beetroot, red onions, tomatoes, some amount of cheese, masala mashed potatoes and chutney to give it that incredibly delicious flavor. The best way to consume a sandwich from the streets of Mumbai is to make an order for a toasted one so you will get the crispy edges and warm center. Sev is used as its topping and then served with chutney and chili sauce by the side.
